The Chuandongbei development, an onshore sour gas project between Chevron and China National Petroleum Corp. (CNPC) became operational, as commercial gas was produced from the purification plant of the Luojiazhai gas field.

Covering an area of over 800sq km, Chuandongbei is located in the Sichuan basin in southwest China and consists of several gas fields, including the Luojiazhai, Tieshanpo and Dukouhe-Qilibei fields.

CNPC has 51% interest in the project and Unocal East China Sea, wholly owned by Chevron, has 49% interest and is the operator. Designed to produce approximately 3 Bcm of gas per annum, Luojiazhai's currently daily capacity is 9.8 Mcm. So far, a purification plant, a sulfur plant, a gas gathering station and 29km of gas collecting pipelines have been completed, as part of this development.
