TDW Offshore Services has successfully completed a key pipeline pressure isolation and joint testing operation offshore western Borneo, Malaysia for Sarawak Shell Berhad.
Working from Sarawak Shell’s F23P-A platform, TDW personnel used the company’s SmartPlug isolation tool on part of the gas export line that runs to the E11R-A platform, making it possible for Shell to install a motoroperated valve (MOV) in preparation for installation of a new compressor module. In order to provide a safe isolation while the line was cut and the new valve was installed, TDW pigged in a 30in SmartPlug (pictured) from the launcher past the site designated for valve installation. Safely isolated, the line could be cut and a new flange welded to it.
Prior to installing the new valve, a joint tester tool was deployed to ensure that flange was properly installed without pressurizing the entire line. The SmartPlug and joint tester were built at TDW Offshore Services’ Norwegian headquarters and deployed with local support from personnel based in Singapore and the company’s agent in Malaysia, Amserve Engineering.
Overall, TDW reported, the affected portion of the gas export line was safely isolated for a period of one month while testing and valve installation took place. The operation was carried out under a three-year frame agreement TDW entered into with Sarawak Shell to provide pipeline pressure isolation services and hot tapping services, as well as a subsea repair clamp.
‘Had they not retained TDW to use its SmartPlug isolation tool to create a double-block on the line, Shell would have been faced with the costly expense of bleeding down the affected line to isolate the affected area from hydrocarbons,’ said TDW director of operations and technology Rutger Schouten.
