Australian energy company AWE said the last appraisal well planned for the Waitsia field in 2017, is drilling ahead targeting conventional reservoirs in the Kingia and High Cliff Sandstones.

Waitsia-4 is at 1512m measured depth below rotary table (MDRT) and drilling in a 311mm hole to the next planned section depth of 3065m MDRT, following the installation of 340mm surface casing at 1166m MDRT.

Spudded on 10 July, the well is forecast to take approximately five weeks to complete. It will be directionally drilled to a planned maximum total depth of 3834m MDRT.

Waitsia-4 is designed to appraise the gas potential in the eastern extension of the Waitsia field. The well will be logged and if the results are positive, it will be completed as a production well and a flow test may be performed.

Waitsia-4 is located approximately 18.5km southeast of Dongara in the onshore Perth basin, Western Australia, and 3.3km north-northeast of Waitsia-3. The approved work program for the well does not include hydraulic fracture stimulation. The project is a 50:50 joint venture between operator AWE, and Origin Energy.
