Engineering company Ramboll has been appointed by the North Oil Co. (NOC) to carry out pre-front-end engineering design (FEED) study for three new wellhead platforms at the Al-Shaheen field, off the north-eastern coast of Qatar in the Arabian Gulf.

Al-Shaheen is the largest offshore oil field in Qatar, covering more than 40% of Qatar’s oil production. Situated 80km north of Doha, in the North Gas field, it covers 2.214sq km and currently produces approximately 300,000 bo/d.

According to Tommy Laursen, managing director of Ramboll oil and gas in the Middle East, this is not the first time the company is involved in Al-Shaheen. Ramboll has previously carried out detailed brownfield design on the field spending almost 3 million hours.

“Qatar has one of the fastest growing economies in the world and Al-Shaheen significantly contributes to the country’s economy and energy security. Therefore, we have prepared carefully and thoroughly to be part of this new initiative,” said Laursen.

Al-Shaheen has been developed by Maersk Oil since 1992. From July 2017 NOC, a joint venture between Qatar Petroleum and Total will be the new developer of Al-Shaheen for the next 25 years.
